Addicted to K750!

I once wrote here about my mobile dreams. I said i am a samsung fan. Then my dream was to get a cool new samsung model( SGH-I300 ).But I couldnt find one in our **** market.I realized that such a phone cant find a market in India.Who will buy a phone with a 3gb harddisk?? .But that was on march!A few months after i got my K500i from Sony Ericsson - the company i preffered next to samsung. It was a cool phone. And i was pretty happy with it.Read my review about k500i here. But still deep in my mind i had a strong desire of having a top end phone. But samsung is not marketing there top end phones in india. And i dont know any one in korea! :( . Then i saw k750i and i was pretty much impressed with its looks.Cool and it had a proffessional look. Not much funky, sleek and had smooth curves.( And that was what i loved most on my E700) .It had a memory expansion slot( which i missed badly on my k500) , a 2MP camera with Autofocus and Macro Mode(Which I luv most in digi Cams). A crystal clear screen with 256K color.Every thing else is as same in k500(mp3,video,40 polyphonic,....which has become a standard even in low end phones) .So now am a Sonyericsson Fan :D .And i lov my new gadget..And ask me whats my fav passion? yea..Photography!!! Check some of my snaps with k750 ok..Thats enough to show the camera quality..:P now i hav to go ....Will come back with a complete review of k750...Bye all..

Windows Tweak: Hide Drives

Ever wish you could make one of your computer's drives invisible to anyone snooping around on your system? Well, happy days are here my friend! Whether you have sensitive docs, pictures, or any other private data, this is one of the easiest ways to keep them safe. Keep in mind that you'll still be able to access your hidden drives; you just won't see that they exist in Windows Explorer or the My Computer folder. Back up your registry before you start! 1. Open Regedit. 2. Navigate to one of these strings:HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ Software\ Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ Policies\ Explorer - this only changes the settings for the current logged in user HKEY_LOCALMACHINE\ Software\ Microsoft\ Windows\ CurrentVersion\ Policies\ Explorer - this changes the settings for all users on the machine. You may have to create the key folder "Explorer" manually. 3. In the Explorer key folder, create a new DWORD value by right-clicking Explorer, then choosing New DWORD value. Name the value "NoDrives" (without the quotes). This value defines local and network drive visibility for each logical drive on the computer. All drives will be visible as long as this value's data is set to 0. 4. Following the table below, enter the decimal number corresponding to the drive(s) you want to hide as NoDrives value data. When you right-click on NoDrives and choose Modify, make sure you select Decimal base, not Hexadecimal. Drive Number to hide A: 1 B: 2 C: 4 D: 8 E: 16 F: 32 G: 64 H: 128 I: 256 J: 512 K: 1024 L: 2048 M: 4096 N: 8192 O: 16384 P: 32768 Q: 65536 R: 131072 S: 262144 T: 524288 U: 1048576 V: 2097152 W: 4194304 X: 8388608 Y: 16777216 Z: 33554432 All drives 67108863 If you want to hide more than one drive, you simply add the drive amounts together for a combined total. For example, to hide the D:/ and T:/ drives, add the decimal value for the D:/ drive to the decimal value to the T:/ drive.8 (D) + 524288 (T) = 524296To disable all of your visible drives, set the value to 67108863.You must reboot your PC to see your changes. Have fun!

Some times Floods are a boon!

I always dreamed of me being a student in kerala university-for their blessed life with strikes and all..exams getting postponed due to strikes..harthals...For my stupid fate i became an unlucky student of Anna University. They are loyal to their job.Till today , after completing almost 4 years in anna university i was never allowed to enjoy the harthal pleasure.Kerala students should thank politically volatile keralites for their response to every single harthals and strikes. They call out for a strike even for a simple reason like a fight between bus conductor and a student! I dont understand how the local people is connected with the incident.Any way the whole city inhibitants get a chance for another not-so-well-waited holiday. You people are really blessed! But this time lucky angel crossed the border and reached us! Our exams get postponed one after another. Not because of any strikes..Not because of harthals...No ministers died..Exam question papers didnt get leaked out...No one claimed a case in court against COE...then? Its because of floods! yea ...It rained like hell for two weeks and whole of tamil nadu was flooded..21 districts got drowned.Chennai city literally started boat services..Remote areas got disconnected from the outside world...Helicopters were issued with food packets and medicine.Anna University campus was flooded...Hostlers were shifted to first floor...Military was introduced for rescue acts..and even in its southern end..even in our lil kumaracoil we got a heavy rain ..with fields and ponds over flowing over roads. And what..Exams were postponed. Not once..It kept going on like that for two weeks..Postponed exams got postponed again..and again..and even univ people got confused with the dates..Some exams were postponed to sundays!! Finally...a revised timetable is out now! exams from 15th december to 31st december!! exams on 24th and 31st!!!! how the hell?? So how we are supposed to enjoy our christmas and new year? Last time it was tsunami and now its floods..But actually i wanted this changes in shedule :D I was not prepared for the exams..And i wanted to clear those ****ing arriers...So ..i think its my lucky fate!..so some times floods are a boon!!....... PS: Not intended to wound hearts of millions who are suffering from floods.I feel sorry for them.

MSN - Yahoo Bhai Bhai!

Yes! Its not just a rumour.Microsoft (MSN) and Yahoo! messenger announced that thier respective IM services would be interOperbale from mid-2006.This means you will now be able to add your msn buddies into yahoo and vice-versa and also chat ,send enmoticons and view their online status. However ,before you start popping open bottles, you should know that all this has been promised earlier by both companies and not much happened since. But as this being an official press statement made by both companies,we're inclined to give them the benifit of doubt. and wait and watch.

Proud to be an Indian!

There are 3.22 Million Indians in America 38% of Doctors in America are Indians. 12% of Scientists in America are Indians. 36% of NASA employees are Indians. 34% of MICROSOFT employees are Indians 28% of IBM employees are Indians 17% of INTEL employees are Indians 13% of XEROX employees are Indians 23% of Indian Community in America is having Green-Card India was the richest country on earth until the time of British invasion in the early 17th Century. Bhaskaracharya calculated the time taken by the earth to orbit the sun hundreds of years before the astronomer Smart. Time taken by earth to orbit the sun: (5th century)365.258756484 days. According to the Gemological Institute of America, up until 1896, India was the only source for diamonds to the world. USA based IEEE has proved what has been a century old suspicion in the world scientific community that the pioneer of wireless communication was Prof. Jagdeesh Bose and not Marconi. Sushruta is the father of surgery. 2600 years ago he and health scientists of his time conducted complicated surgeries like caesareans, cataract, artificial limbs, fractures, urinary stones and even plastic surgery and brain surgery. Usage of anaesthesia was well known in ancient. Quotes About India Albert Einstein said: We owe a lot to the Indians, who taught us how to count, without which no worthwhile scientific discovery could have been made. Mark Twain said: India is the cradle of the human race, the birthplace human speech, the mother of history, the grandmother of legend, and the great grand mother of tradition. Our most valuable and most constructive materials in the history of man are treasured up in India only. French scholar Romain Rolland said: If there is one place on the face of earth where all the dreams of living men have found a home from the very earliest days when man began the dream of existence, it is India. Hu Shih, former Ambassador of China to USA said: India conquered and dominated China culturally for 20 centuries without ever having to send a single soldier across her border. All the above is just the TIP of the iceberg, the list could be endless. BUT, if we don't see even a glimpse of that great India in the India that we see today, it clearly means that we are not working up to our potential and that if we do, we could once again be an evershining and inspiring country setting a bright path for rest of the world to follow. 20 things you didnt know about windows Xp!

You've read the reviews and digested the key featureenhancements and operational changes. Now it's time todelve a bit deeper and uncover some of Windows XP's secrets 1. It boasts how long it can stay up. Whereas previousversions of Windows were coy about how long they wentbetween boots, XP is positively proud of its stamina.Go to the Command Prompt in the Accessories menu from the All Programs start button option, and then type'systeminfo'. The computer will produce a lot ofuseful info, including the uptime. If you want to keepthese, type 'systeminfo > info.txt'. This creates a file called info.txt you can look at later withNotepad. (Professional Edition only). 2. You can delete files immediately, without havingthem move to the Recycle Bin first. Go to the Startmenu, select Run... and type ' gpedit.msc'; then selectUser Configuration, Administrative Templates, WindowsComponents, Windows Explorer and find the Do not movedeleted files to the Recycle Bin setting. Set it.Poking around in gpedit will reveal a great many interface and system options, but take care -- somemay stop your computer behaving as you wish.(Professional Edition only). 3. You can lock your XP workstation with two clicks ofthe mouse. Create a new shortcut on your desktop using a right mouse click, and enter 'rundll32.exeuser32.dll,LockWorkStation' in the location field.Give the shortcut a name you like. That's it -- justdouble click on it and your computer will be locked. And if that's not easy enough, Windows key + L will do the same. 4. XP hides some system software you might want toremove, such as Windows Messenger, but you can tickleit and make it disgorge everything. Using Notepad orEdit, edit the text file /windows/inf/sysoc.inf, search for the word 'hide' and remove it. You can thengo to the Add or Remove Programs in the Control Panel, select Add/Remove Windows Components and there will beyour prey, exposed and vulnerable. 5. For those skilled in the art of DOS batch files, XPhas a number of interesting new commands. Theseinclude 'eventcreate' and 'eventtriggers' for creatingand watching system events, 'typeperf' for monitoringperformance of various subsystems, and 'schtasks' forhandling scheduled tasks. As usual, typing the commandname followed by /? will give a list of options --they're all far too baroque to go into here. 6. XP has IP version 6 support -- the next generationof IP. Unfortunately this is more than your ISP has,so you can only experiment with this on your LAN. Type'ipv6 install' into Run... (it's OK, it won't ruin your existing network setup) and then 'ipv6 /?' at thecommand line to find out more. If you don't know whatIPv6 is, don't worry and don't bother. 7. You can at last get rid of tasks on the computerfrom the command line by using 'taskkill /pid' and thetask number, or just 'tskill' and the process number.Find that out by typing 'tasklist', which will alsotell you a lot about what's going on in your system. 8. XP will treat Zip files like folders, which is niceif you've got a fast machine. On slower machines, youcan make XP leave zip files well alone by typing'regsvr32 /u zipfldr.dll' at the command line. If you change your mind later, you can put things back asthey were by typing 'regsvr32 zipfldr.dll'. 9. XP has ClearType -- Microsoft's anti-aliasing fontdisplay technology -- but doesn't have it enabled bydefault. It's well worth trying, especially if youwere there for DOS and all those years of staring at ascreen have given you the eyes of an astigmatic bat.To enable ClearType, right click on the desktop, select Properties, Appearance, Effects, selectClearType from the second drop-down menu and enablethe selection. Expect best results on laptop displays. If you want to use ClearType on the Welcome loginscreen as well, set the registry entry HKEY_USERS/.DEFAULT/ControlPanel/Desktop/FontSmoothingType to 2. 10. You can use Remote Assistance to help a friendwho's using network address translation (NAT) on ahome network, but not automatically. Get your pal to email you a Remote Assistance invitation and edit thefile. Under the RCTICKET attribute will be a NAT IPaddress, like 192.168.1.10. Replace this with yourchum's real IP address -- they can find this out by going to www.whatismyip.com -- and get them to makesure that they've got port 3389 open on their firewalland forwarded to the errant computer. 11. You can run a program as a different user without logging out and back in again. Right click the icon, select Run As... and enter the user name and passwordyou want to use. This only applies for that run. Thetrick is particularly useful if you need to have administrative permissions to install a program, whichmany require. Note that you can have some fun byrunning programs multiple times on the same system asdifferent users, but this can have unforeseen effects. 12. Windows XP can be very insistent about youchecking for auto updates, registering a Passport, using Windows Messenger and so on. After a while, thenagging goes away, but if you feel you might slip the bonds of sanity before that point, run Regedit, go toHKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Explorer/Advanced and create a DWORD valuecalled EnableBalloonTips with a value of 0. 13. You can start up without needing to enter a username or password. Select Run... from the start menuand type 'control userpasswords2', which will open theuser accounts application. On the Users tab, clear the box for Users Must Enter A User Name And Password ToUse This Computer, and click on OK. An AutomaticallyLog On dialog box will appear; enter the user name andpassword for the account you want to use. 14. Internet Explorer 6 will automatically deletetemporary files, but only if you tell it to. Start thebrowser, select Tools / Internet Options... andAdvanced, go down to the Security area and check thebox to Empty Temporary Internet Files folder when browser is closed. 15. XP comes with a free Network Activity Light, justin case you can't see the LEDs twinkle on your networkcard. Right click on My Network Places on the desktop, then select Properties. Right click on the description for your LAN or dial-up connection, select Properties, then check the Show icon in notification area whenconnected box. You'll now see a tiny network icon onthe right of your task bar that glimmers nicely during network traffic. 16. The Start Menu can be leisurely when it decides toappear, but you can speed things along by changing theregistry entry HKEY_CURRENT_USER/ControlPanel/Desktop/MenuShowDelay from the default 400 to something a little snappier. Like 0. 17. You can rename loads of files at once in WindowsExplorer. Highlight a set of files in a window, thenright click on one and rename it. All the other fileswill be renamed to that name, with individual numbers in brackets to distinguish them. Also, in a folder youcan arrange icons in alphabetised groups by View,Arrange Icon By... Show In Groups. 18. Windows Media Player will display the cover artfor albums as it plays the tracks -- if it found the picture on the Internet when you copied the tracksfrom the CD. If it didn't, or if you have lots ofpre-WMP music files, you can put your own copy of thecover art in the same directory as the tracks. Justcall it folder.jpg and Windows Media Player will pickit up and display it. 19. Windows key + Break brings up the SystemProperties dialogue box; Windows key + D brings up thedesktop; Windows key + Tab moves through the taskbar buttons. 20. The next release of Windows XP, codenamedLonghorn, is due out late next year or early 2006 and won't be much to write home about. The next bigrelease is codenamed Blackcomb and will be out in 2007.

WTF????? hmm.. i have a class @ 10 am and..hmm... i missed my morning alarm! (Again i use my phone as my alarm clock :D) 9:45 AM---> i want to call jithin to let him know that i'l be a little late for the class.agin... i donno his cell number.Who would remember those numbers!! i still remember his landline number even though i havnt dialled it for a while. But i used to use it way before i got my cell. Gud old memoriess..Hm.. Now i have to switchon my cell. But still i dont want to get any incoming calls or messages. So i used another expired sim card , wrote down his number and called him from landline.Well,...a relief now! i switched off the cell again and planned to watcha movie on my system... 12:15 PM---> I'm isolated !!! i donno where my friends are,..They dont know whre i'am.bored!!!! Finally a review abt my fone!

Taken and edited form my Mouthshut Post Now its too late... 4 months since i bought this cell...and i'm about to write a review now! As i had told in previous blogs i used to be SAMSUNG fan..and i continues to be a samsung fan...but ahem.. due to some financial reasons i cudnt buy a samsung fone this time.. I wanted to have d500 :D ..but...u know!!! So i decided to get one of those sub 10K fones... i went to my usual dealor after some market studies(read googling). And asked for one k300i from sony stable.. But it seemed to be too cheap...not in its price..but in looks.. too smaal screen.. So after checking my wallet ;) i asked for one k500i..To my surprise the price was RS 7250/- . For that price i get a fone with mp3,video,12 mb memory(no comments!) vga camera with 4x digital zoom..wat else..3d java games.. class 10 Gprs...streaming video( tht was real fun) ,then one Music DJ,sound recorder..and its triband(although i hav no use for it as am not planning to go overseas any soon :D).. so ishelled out 7250 and bought a K500i... i managed to get a datacable for around 500bucks.. so total investment -> 7750 RS Turning the phone on for the first time impressed me more than the look of the body. I was greeted with the Setup Wizard which smoothly helped me set up the date, time, and contacts in my phonebook (by copying from SIM) and also giving me tips on how to navigate using the buttons. The user interface (such as menus and icons) is extremely vibrant with animations and pop-up menu icons that seem to lift up off the screen into your face. There are a variety of themes preloaded to choose from, all of which have animated wallpapers to give the phone that extra look. Sony Ericsson's graphical user interface always seems to be well developed on all of their latest phones (out running Nokia's menu system, which tends to look boring and sometimes not even animated at all, for example on the 3200). But the graphical menus in this phone are the best I have seen so far. The illumination on the keypad is orange (not one of the best colours to choose!). The K700i has bright/blue LEDS, it would have been better if they kept it the same, maybe choosing orange LEDS is because its cheaper.

Detailed Review

The K500i, aimed at the younger generation, is packed full of not only useful but fun features. Two things I test straight away with any mobile is the quality of pictures taken with the camera and ring tones.

Camera

There is a protective cover (which I keep forgetting to slide open, duh) which covers the camera lens; there is also a mirror for you to take self-portraits (which, by the way I don't use often…). One thing that put me off instantly was the shutter sound (the noise which sounds when a picture is taken). I have noticed that most, if not all Sony Ericsson's don't allow you to turn off this sound. If you've heard the shutter sound on Nokia's, the sound made on this phone is completely different (it doesn't sound soft, or normal!). It's more like the sound of two really sharp blades scratching each other. What's worse, there is no way of turning off the sound (even when putting the phone on silent). It is impossible to take photos without everyone knowing. But I have since gotten used to the shutter sound (and not being able to secretly take pictures of my friends!).

Moving away from the less important 'blade scratching racket', the quality of photos taken with the camera is very high. There are four picture sizes to choose from:

  • Large (640x480)
  • Medium (320x240)
  • Small (160x120)
  • Extended (1280x960)
This handset also has a four times zoom and a brightness adjustor. The pictures that I took I thought came out really well and were very impressive. The phone has an Infrared connector, which worked ok, but it wasn?t too strong a signal and was fiddly to operate. Another option for transferring pictures is to use the serial port cable that came with the phone and the included software?more about this later. You store the photos in the photo library but I found on numerous occasions while accessing this feature that the phone would crash and the only way to recover would be too take the battery out of it, so I thought that this was annoying as well as worrying. In the manual, it says that to get the best photo pictures should be taken in 'Extended' mode. I find this to be false; pictures taken in this mode appear grainy because the image is bigger (almost as if it were a 640x480 picture stretched to create a 1280x960 sized picture). Photos appear best when taken in large size.

This one is a 640*480 pic that i took using k500i with normal settings..Its almost fine! And now here its a 1280*960 sized pic..As You can see its grainy and pixelated..Digitally extended image...So my advice- Use 640*480 setting..

Pictures taken in horizontal position turn out to be the size 480x640. Though you'd expect it to be the other way around (where holding it vertically would produce this size photo because of the shape of the screen).

There are also a number of effects to choose from (Black and White, Negative, Sepia and Solarize). There's also frames you can choose to take pictures with, for example you can take a picture of your friends head on a baby's body. Effects can be used in video mode as well.

Videos

Depending on the current conditions videos are captured on (bright/dark lighting for instance) sizes of a video for 1min of recording can vary from 500kb to 900kb. Quality of videos come out pretty good for a mobile phone (compared to the Nokia 6230, videos taken with the K500i are better, partly because of the bigger screen). You can select from a Large or Small video size (large takes up more space). You can also set the size limit of the video, unlimited/limited. It is best to choose limited when recording a video to send to another phone via MMS. Sounds within a video are good, but the phone picks up closer sounds better than sounds in the background.

For both still picture and video capturing modes, there is a Night Mode function. However, with the poor quality of images taken in dark lighting conditions you would have though night mode would compensate for it. It actually makes the quality worse, making the picture fuzzy and grainy.

Ringtones

One of the first things I did was connect the phone to my computer to transfer MP3 to use as ring tones. Because the phone only has 12mb of memory, and I wanted several tones, I cut short and edited the MP3s so that they lasted about 1min each (long enough for a ring tone). Alternatively I could have chosen to have one full length MP3. I was able to store three MP3 files, each lasting 1 min encoded at a quality of 128kbps (I still had a good 8mb left for pictures and videos). MP3s when set as ring tones sound much louder when your phone rings compared to playing them back using the Media Player.

The clarity of tones is exceptional, including the loudness (seriously, don't put the phone up to your ear when it's ringing, ouch). This goes the same for midi/wav tones. I am extremely pleased with the quality of the tones on the K500i. But it would have been nice to be able to use your own sound file for a message alert, you can only choose from seven of the Sony Ericsson alerts (good job they all sound good!).

Display

Because of the large 128x160 screen, text/images or anything for that matter can be viewed on the display very well. My friend sent me a picture from his Sagem myx7; it was a picture of someone's face. Comparing the two pictures on both screens the K500i produced a much sharper clearer images, the features of the face stood out more (such as the eyes) whereas on the myx7 the eyes seemed to blend and blur into the face making it hard to see. Colours on the K500i are very bold/bright making it great to look at.

Sometimes when you glare at a TFT PC monitor then look at say a phone with 4096 colours (for example the Nokia 3200) the 3200s screen will noticeably look dull and lifeless. But with this 65,536 colour screen looking at a monitor with a high colour depth and looking at the K500i there is no difference in the boldness of colour. The screen surprisingly appears just as well outdoors in the sunlight as it would and does indoors. There is hardly any glare and there is no loss in colour.

Phonebook

It's important to have a phonebook which not only lets the user enter in contacts with ease, but view contacts with ease as well. The phonebook is the best I've used so far, for each contact you can easily enter in details such as their name, several numbers (fax, home, work, mobile etc), e-mail, house address and notes. You can also assign a picture (which appears when calling the contact/receiving a call from that contact) or a ring tone. One problem is that you can only assign ring tones to a limited amount of contacts which can be off putting. Nor can you assign tones to specific groups. The group function in the phonebook is there to make it easier for you to send messages to multiple persons (for instance you might send a party invitation SMS to your contacts under the group name Mates), unlike Nokia phones, where groups are used to identify contacts.

Voice Control

There are a number of things you can use voice control for:

  • To activate voice control (using a Magic Word)
  • To dial a number
  • To answer/reject calls

Before any voice command can be used, you need to tell your phone you want to use a voice command for it to know to listen to what you're going to say. This can do this by pressing and holding the '+ Volume' key on the side of the phone. However, if you have a hands free kit attached (which isn't included) you can say a Magic Word which will automatically tell the phone to listen to a command that you about to say (you phone will in essence be pressing the '+ Volume' key for you). This word should be something odd, you wouldn't want to make it (for example) 'command' because you might say 'command' in a normal conversation with a friend but don't want to use a voice command on your phone. It's best to choose a word like 'bazooka' (just a suggestion!). This feature can only be used when using a hands free accessory.

Another cool voice feature you can do is Voice Answering. When your phone rings, just say the word 'Answer' and the call is connected. Similarly, you can reject calls by saying the word 'busy'. These must be pre-recording and setup in the voice control menu before using this or any voice activation feature. Also, voice answering can only be used if your ring tone is not an MP3. My guess is that the phone cannot tell the difference between you voice and an MP3. Also, this feature can only be used when using a hands free accessory.

Last but not least, you can dial numbers by using voice control. This feature overall is very accurate, upon using it 10-20 times it hasn't failed to call the correct person, it also works very well in loud environments (I voice dialled successfully with loud music on). You can also get the phone to repeat the pre-recorded name of the contact you have dialled using voice control so you know that you have called the correct person. The best thing is that you can have an unlimited amount of voice tags for contacts.

3D Java Games

This is the first phone I've played on which has 3D Java Games. The K500i uses Mascot Capsule 3D, graphics produced on the Super Real Tennis by Sega are pretty good (of course not as good as graphics produced on a Nintendo GBA!). The game is real good as well. There's a two other games preloaded, Darts and a Fighting game. There aren't any Applications on the phone, but there is a folder for you to download and install them for use.

Organiser

This consists of the following.

  • Calendar
  • Tasks
  • Notes
  • Applications
  • Alarms
  • Timer
  • Stopwatch
  • Calculator
  • Code Memo

It's easy to navigate through dates using the Calendar. One thing which is off putting is the inability to add in a note to the calendar without having to put in appointment times. Nor can you select what type of note it is (for example on Nokia phones you can select to put a birthday note in the calendar, which also calculates how old the person will be). With my previous Nokia I relied on my calendar to remind of upcoming birthdays. Compared to Nokia phones, it's not as easy to enter in notes (or what's known as appointments on SE phones). Tasks and Notes are similar features, tasks is used to list a bunch of tasks (obviously) which can be ticked when completed. Notes simply allow you to write short notes.

The reason why the alarm feature is called Alarms (plural) is because you can set a recurrent alarm which will sound at a specific time on selected days of the week (handy for reminding those of you who are addicted to Eastenders). You can also change the alarm sound to any sound file you have available on your phone. Timer lets you countdown (by hours, minutes and/or seconds). The timer alert sounds realistic to a kitchen timer. Stopwatch allows you to not only time but also record lap times, something you might use if you ever decide to time someone running on a race track I guess. The calculator is simple and easy to use; Code memo is used to safely store credit card codes and password which are protected by a personal PIN set by you. Applications is simply a shortcut to installed applications on your phone which are stored in a folder in your File Manager.

WAP Browsing/streaming media

I've used many WAP browsers on different phones, Motorola C333, V525, and Samsung E710. I found it to be extremely slow and choppy on all of these mobiles (perhaps it's just these specific models that were slow). Since the K500i was my first Sony Ericsson, I was worried as to whether or not WAP browsing would be as good as Nokia's. It's actually the same if not better than Nokia's. Once handy feature is that when addresses are typed in, they are remembered so you can simply go to 'Enter Address', scroll down and select a previously entered address. Of course, the list can be cleared, including other lists such as history. The speed seems very zippy, however this may be network dependant but to give you an idea I'm using a GPRS connection on Airtel.

Calling Features

As mentioned before, you can assign pictures to contacts. This is a cool feature; I've added pictures of people in my family to their names, all of which have them pulling funny faces (sorry sis if you always look like that in snapshots…). Any who, these pictures appear when not only receiving calls but when making calls. It's nice to see their faces and have a chuckle whilst you're listening to the dialling tone. Another great calling feature is the ability to only receive calls from contacts/numbers added to your 'Accept Calls' list. So for instance you can add all numbers but leave out certain ones like 'HSBC', if you're avoiding them that is (you might want to unhook your landline whilst you're at it). You can set up to 9 speed dials (1-9) however 1 is usually taken up by voicemail.

I didn't realise that you don't keep hold of the number, instead for speed dialling you press the number (1-9) then press 'Call'. Keeping hold of a button (1-9) will take u to the phonebook and scroll down to the specific first letter on the number you press. For instance, keeping hold of '2' opens your phonebook and goes to the contacts beginning who's name begins with the letter 'A'. This is a handy feature, but not for people who have gone through a transition from using a Nokia to this K500i (or Sony Ericsson mobiles, if all do this). Sometimes, I keep hold of a speed dial number and hold the phone up to my ear......'silence' (I only realise afterwards). But I suppose I'll adjust to it. The Call List feature is well planned out, calls that were answered, dialled or missed all have small different coloured arrow icons beside them (blue for answered, green for dialled and red for missed). This is handy for viewing all calls, or for reminding you whether or not you dialled or answered a call. Alternatively instead of viewing all, you can move left and right to different tabs which show answered/dialled/missed calls alone.

Messaging (SMS/MMS/E-Mail/My Friends/Presence)

T9 text entry with multiple languages makes it easy to write messages (or enter text for that matter). But it is also easy to enter text without using T9, there's hardly no learning curve and it took me only about a day to get typing at the keys fast. It's simple to create MMS's, and of course there's the option of adding several slides to your message. I think the maximum size for the message is around 100kb, but the phone will warn you if your message is too big. You can add pictures, videos, sounds, text to your message. You can also change the colour of the text and background (however I'm not sure if this appears the same on the recipients mobile). The E-mail client supports POP3 and IMAP4 accounts; it is simple and easy to set-up and use (though I haven't set mine up properly!). My Friends/Presence is new and is now becoming a must have on most mobiles; it's an instant messaging service on your phone.

However, because this is network dependant, my phone (being on AIRTEL) does not have the My Friends feature available to access. Instead, where this icon should be in the menu the Call List has taken over. PerhapsAirtel isn't planning on hosting this service (as it requires network operators to host servers for this feature to work). But if this feature were available on my handset, I would be able to view who's online and their current status (just like Yahoo messenger or msn messenger) and I would be able to chat to contacts and create chat rooms to chat to several of them. Sadly, I will never know what this feature will truly be like.

Customizing the phone

There's so much you can change. For example, you can change your start-up image, wallpaper and screensaver. For all three you can choose an animated GIF image. One problem with the screensaver is that the image/animation selected will only appear for about 8 seconds after which the clock comes up and moves around the screen. It's not so much a bad thingBut also along with the idle clock display icons appear (to tell you for example if you've got a message, missed call etc).

The clock display is shown in white on a black background, so even when the backlight is off you can see the time and any icons that should appear. Themes are really cool which are used to change the look/style of menus and icons, the phone is preloaded with several. But you can also edit them using a program which can be downloaded from the Sony Ericsson Developers website (developer.sonyericsson.com- you need to sign up though).

Other Features

The handsfree loudspeaker is loud enough, and the microphone sensitive enough for you to have the phone away from your face. The MusicDJ for composing ring tones if fun to play with, and it's easy to create nice sounding tones (once you've got the hang of what sounds mixed together sound good). All files (Pictures, Videos, Tones, Applications and Themes) are stored in their separate folders accessible using the File Manager. Here you can check the amount of space your phone has left (in mb) and also how much space each folder is taking up. You can also add your own folders. One excellent feature is the ability to select several files, after which you can 'delete all' selected or 'move all' selected. However you can choose to 'send all' which would have been nice. Sending files to a PC or phone is easy, simply select the file and choose send via IR.

You can also select to send using E-mail and MMS. When sending to the computer via IR, you simple align it to your PC, press send via IR and your PC should pop-up with a message saying accept file (or something on those lines). This goes the same for sending from PC to the phone, but this time you need to activate the IR on your phone, select a file on your PC, go to send and select send to nearby computer. Your phone will sound an alert and ask for your to the accept the incoming file. Alternatively, instead of using Windows Infra-red facilities, you can download the File Manager from fun.sonyericsson.com. This makes it easier for you to upload and download multiple files in one go. But I've had some trouble keeping a connection with the phone and PC using this software (maybe it's just my PC). Another feature I didn't realise the K500i has is that when the battery power is dangerously low the power button on top of the phone flashes red because it has a red LED in it. I read on several forums over the Internet that many Sony Ericsson's have this feature (so why don't they put it in the bloomin manual!!!).

And one thing that i hate most in this phone is its range!!! Sometimes when i put it pocket and take out after some time it shows Emergency Sev. !!!! crap!! hats the single thing i hate in this phone.Cant trust the signal quality.Another thing is it hangs when opening camera pics folder. Not a serious problem, yet an annoying one!

So my advice : Buy it if u live in city perimeter where there is no signal problem.. :)

What Is Cell Phone Cloning Fraud?

Every cell phone is supposed to have a unique factory-set electronic serial number (ESN) and telephone number (MIN). A cloned cell phone is one that has been reprogrammed to transmit the ESN and MIN belonging to another (legitimate) cell phone. Unscrupulous people can obtain valid ESN/MIN combinations by illegally monitoring the radio wave transmissions from the cell phones of legitimate subscribers. After cloning, both the legitimate and the fraudulent cell phones have the same ESN/MIN combination and cellular systems cannot distinguish the cloned cell phone from the legitimate one. The legitimate phone user then gets billed for the cloned phone's calls. Call your carrier if you think you have been a victim of cloning fraud. The fraudster can make calls on your behalf or send messages etc and it would be easy to tarnish your reputation in this manner. For cell phone cloning fraud, the cellular equipment manufacturing industry has deployed authentication systems that have proven to be a very effective countermeasure to cloning, however it still does happen. There is another interesting method. There are chips available which can be set into a cell phone, you can then gift this cell phone to an unsuspecting victim, provided you know him. Perhaps you can make him win a contest of some sort. The cell phone now becomes your bug, something that the user is sure to carry around with him. You activate it by simply calling this fellow from a preset number. What happens is that he get no inkling that a call is being received, the phone automatically picks it u, there is no change in the display or any indication that the cell phone is now transmitting everything to the person at the other end. So if you are paranoid enough, it makes sense to not accept such gifts from people. If you don’t have any security threat then chances are no ones going to gift you one either! Of course to counter the threat of electronic eavesdropping there are counter measures available such as encryption. Again its not for the usual people, wont be cost effective that way, but you can always find more details. It is an entirely different topic per se and would make material for another article. So keep coming back!

Cell Phone Tapping

Cell phones have become omnipresent ; no one even spares another glance at someone hurrying along the sidewalk and seems to be talking to his own self. Of course he is using the handsfree and chatting to his contact who may be on the other side of the globe for all we care.

Considering that we use a cell phone even in the presence of a land line now that call rates are mostly on par, perhaps we should be evaluating security concerns about this risk. While it is common knowledge that authorities have had access to our calls, we were satisfied by the fact that this capability could not be mis-used. Even the authorities needed to get permission from a court of law with specific reasons for their wanting to do so. (Of course I assume that you did nothing to piss off the CBI or an agency on that level. In case you already did then God Help You, those people have technology which would leave you dumbstruck, as well as a free hand to use it when they think necessary). With landlines, it was difficult to tap the phone, especially since they would need to put a physical bug on the wires which meant access to the lines and a kind of sophistication which would not be easily learnt. However with things going wireless, it becomes easier. Interception devices are now available that can record conversations. If you suspected the presence of these things and sent confidential data by SMS, then it was in vain since these things are powerful enough to get these too. To add salt to the wounds, the conversations and messages are neatly indexed and stored in a data base for future reference. These interceptors are cleverly disguised in forms of briefcases, suitcases or perhaps even a rugged outdoor case (cant be smaller than those since a particular size is required to be effective, maybe with more advances in technology we will have smaller ones.) While they do have their own power units which could last for some time, its better if you gave them a power supply since spying on someone is not something you do for an hour or two. Days of patience are required before you can have results. Don’t worry about power points though, these things are designed to be inconspicuous; you are ready to go even with a car cigarette lighter point.

These portable interception devices cost someplace between 20,000 dollars upwards depending on the features but they do come with a guarantee of getting you behind bars if you are not a law enforcing agent. Another option is to use the cell phone cloning or SIM card cloning method. However this requires you to have access to the device for some time.

IPOD Killers!

There is an underground buzz that has been going around in the music industry of late. iPods and Mp3 players, even Discmans are running around scared. Cellphones have turned assassins and are ruthlessly gobbling up the market share of all of these players. Seriously though, cell phones keep getting smarter all the time. Already people who used to carry around two devices like a handheld (PDA) and cell phone have given up both and opted for a smartphone which can easily perform both these features. After the PDA's it is now the turn of the music players. Cell phones have some inherent advantages, users are afraid to carry about too many devices since that increases the chanves of loosing them. given an option everyone will go in for a device which can do all the things that the user wants. Already digital cameras are used only for special occassions or when you really need print quality photos, rest of the time it is the cell phone on which this duty falls. Other advantages included that being a tool for connectivity itself, it would be extremely easy to load new songs on to the phone. Example of this being that most phones today have bluetooth, GPRS, IR, USB and so many different options that the user is more then certain to have his pick. In case of music, the only factor that made users still opt in for Mp3 players was the lack of capacity. Even handsets that had built in Mp3 players seldom went above 32-64 Megabytes. This was a serious bottleneck for music fans. Higher capacity cards of 256 or 512 Megs were too slow to browse through and people decided to wait till technology caught on. And while Apple's iPod is considered a runaway success, its millions units sold annually pales in comparison to the hundreds of millions of mobile phones sold last year. The mobile industry is poised to grow exponentially. Another problem was that as playlists got longer, it became more difficult to find songs of your preference. It isnt exactly fun searching for songs through a long list without a pointer device like a mouse to aid you. As the world recognises the growing importance of a cell phone in areas other than simply talking, applications are rapidly being created so that each and every whim and fancy of the user is adhered to. A company in Seattle , Melodeo's has created a software which allows the user to browse through a long playlist, which may even go into hundreds without any trouble. Melodeo’s simple, intuitive user interface also makes it easy for users to shop, preview, purchase, play and store their selections. Users can navigate by artist, genre, song and album title among others, all with detailed information about each track—even album art.And their patented Powersearch technology makes it easy to type using the handset’s dialing pad, letting users find their tunes with a minimum of keystrokes. When you purchase a song, after selecting through the catalogue and listening to the ones you think are intersting, you can opt to go in for dual download. This means that you pay only once for the content, a higher quality version stays back on the PC while a smaller and easier to play one resides on the cell phone memory. Songs on cell phones are just one way in which the "handys" are taking over the world. Perhaps this is what was thought when Sci-Fi writers envisioned a product that would allow humans to be reachable anywhere on the planet (via video calls or voice calls), carry their data with them which would include music, work related stuff as well as emergency tracing service. Undoubtedly cell phones are not just iPod killers but are eating away into competiting devices at a phenomenal rate.

Tough New Law

In the first such move that we've heard of,Sweden's parliament has passed a law that will make it illegal to download copyrighted materials from the internet, effectively from july 1.The law also otlaws technology and software used to circumvent copyprotections on copyrighted materials, including Music,Movies, and Games. It happens that Sweden has been plagued by one of the highest rates of piracy in the world.Until now it was only prohibited to make copyrighted materials available for others to download,While it was legal to download it yourself. The scope of new law doesnt end there;it also makes it illegal to copy an entire book in a xerox. So how will be the law affecting the people??Also they implied an extra tax on recordable CDs and DVDs,there by discouraging the usage of writable medias.Consumers will have to pay an extra tax of 1.75 kronor(RS 10) for a 700mb disk. Also ,the prize of a 5 GB DVD is expected to rise from 10 kronor(Rs 60) to 30 Kronor(Rs 180)..[ well....this is the first time i ever heard of anysuch thing!!!! Buying a DVD in India is lot cheaper than doing it at Sweden...] And moreover..ahem..i used to download stuffs from a notorious sweden site Pirate bay. Its almost the biggest torrent database in net.So now i fear whether it get closed or not..Till now its all good news..The site is live and active... :D

Got a proj to complete :D

hmmm...A busy week..First i decided my project title as secure messenger...and platform as ASP/VB .NET . But later i had to shift my platform to J2EE..aahh...due to some technical reasons Actually its really tough to implement it using VB... Then again i fell into confusionss...Wr to take net course..? wr to take J2EE...? Ok...now i got a solution.. I shud change my J2EE course @ NIIT to .NET and .NET @ Nascent to J2EE.. Ok.. Now wat??? Yepp...now i hav to concentrate on my back papers.. and i hav to start those tech articles again ...

About to start my project

Now its the time for me to think about my future......Its pretty funny how my tastes changes..I had a strong ambition right there from my kgs...But it kept changing...Every time i heard about something cool i wanted to become a pro in that.I once wanted to be a scientist...tht was when i was in my 4th or 5th standard.Actually i dont know how i got into the idea of becoming a scientist.I was not a studious , bright kid . An average...to be honest a below average student. But some how the idea of becoming a scientist kept growing within me.When i was in 6th or 7th grade some teacher asked every one what they have to become in future. On my turn i said "Scientist". I think the teacher was a bit confused with my tone and she asked me which branch do i want to SPESIALIZE in.That was the time i redesigned my thoughts for he first time.I found so many branches in science and but couldn't find one that was suiting me.At last i got one!! A ROCKET SCIENTIST!!! wreeewww!! I read some where that rocket science was very complex and only best in best could create a future in that field.Well...I'm best in best..So why shouldnt i turn to rocket science??? ;) From that moment i wanted to become a rocket scientist.Later when my uncle working as a scientist in kalpakam nuclear reactor told me about the advanced facilities and MI2 style security features there,i shifted my future from rockets to nuclear physics. But during highschool it again changed. On my 9th std our computer miss scolded me for a bad bad performance in the term exams."huh..? u ppl never takes my subject seriously....Cz its not counted to ur pass marks .....or fro the rank,,huh? But du u knw that the future is in computer science?? You cud do nothing if u donn know any thng ab't computers..."But I was used to these stuffs . But one word from her mouth ..future is in computer science..That turned my future...yea,The future is in computers..So what would i do with a rocket science or nuclear science if i dont know computers?? And that was the final shift in my ambition.I decided to become a computer proffesional and first it was biased to hardware field. But now towards software field. And here i am ,after 3 years of DEDICATED software engineering course i am confused again with my project. What to do ? which platform? COuld i do it on my own? or shall i steal some others report? Linux or windows? .NET or J2EE?? research work or aplication development? Still i hav no idea of what to du.I have decided to do application development and to take .NET as the platform. Now what? Which topic? an existing one? Or dig out a new idea? confuuused!! Well.... may be i need some rest. And after that i need to calm down and have to concentrate into myself. And to add to the stress i have joined some courses for these six months. A .NET course, J2EE @ NIIT and flash @ Arena Multimedia. So six months of hard work !!But i need to do that....for my sweet old dream of becoming a computer proffessional ;)

I was stuck with the work of two sites..So had no time fr blogging:( Nw i'm from linux...Fedora core 3! A gud one ... And about the sites..I hav started two forums as i hv told in last post.Of these two trivandrum.tk & Techhelpclub.tk ,the first one seems to be picking up quickly. So I'm planning to shift the techhelpclub to trivandrum.tk as its subdivision,cz i cudnt maintain the two at the same time.As trivandrum.tk is much general on its topic it cud easily get subscribers:)

Xaams Are over! :))))

So atlast a loong vacation..cant say it as a vacation though..cz i'm having project from june...But in my hometown itself..:) so its vacation. Now two more sites into my list! Trivandrum.tk and Techhelpclub.tk .One on phpBB and other on invision..Seems like invision has got better control over phpBB. But phpBB have some extra skins with them, but using them will make ur forum like a christmas tree....Too flashy :( And i request every one to join Trivandrum.tk and Techhelpclub.tk

Chicken Chips

Do you know what are chips (i mean microchips) made up of?? Silicon?? yeah ..right!But it probably wont be the answer for longIf the things are working according to the plan we 'll soon see chips made up of chicken feather! It may sound weird but it's not. This is how the logic goes: Microchips are wafers made up of silicon ,inscribed with a maze of transisters. The computational power of the chip depends on the speed at which electric signals travels throught the transistors. As compared to chicken feather signals drag with silicon as there is much higher resistance. When tested for speed the feather chip allowed movement at about twice the rate of silicon. Also feather is a sustainable one.Other benefits of using feathers is that it is an environmently friendly solution,it produces lighter composites and gives farmers more income for their waste products. But we have to wait long for these chips to be here in market. But the hope is there as the chip giant Intel had shown interest in the idea.So lets wait and watch while they fry chicken chips!

Blue DvD

We've seen DVDs replacing CDs,But what next??The next on arena are HD-DVD and Blue-Ray Disc. Both use a blue-laser for read-write instead of the usual red laser in curreb\nt generation DVDs.Blue rays have the shortest wave lenght among the visible spectrem. So it can pack more data within the same space. Both HD-DVD and Blure-Ray DVD use Blue laser ,but they use the technology in two ways.Lets go deep into two of'em Blue-ray discs are more efficient with using the blue laser and pack at least 25GB per layer, whichcan be increased in multiples of 25 as you add more layers and use both sides of the media. The developers are saying that they could introduce 50GB this year and then by 2007 it will reach 200GB.To achieve this they use a completely new technology and hence it costs lot for mass production....lot means...sony released a 23GB Blue ray drive with SCSI and USB interface and the cost is well above 1.25Lakhs Rs. HD-DVD on the other hand starts with 15 GB per layer and the capacities wud therefore increase in multiples of 15.Blue_ray is definitly a superio technology. But technology alone wont save a product.Production and marketing costs are also important. But HD-DVD maintains some backward compatability with DVD,so the same production facilities can be used to manufacture its products, meaning lesser production cost ,faster time to market and low cost to products. And there is a rumour that Microsoft will ship its upcoming OS Longhorn on HD-DVDs.But Blue-ray is more activewith more than 70 MNCs suppoting it including giant Sony,Hp,JVC,TDK ...So at moment it seems like that inspite of the price ,future is with Blue-Ray.But it will not be a surprise if both technologies co-exists like the DVD+R/RW and DVD-R/RW formats.

Internet2 P2P

I think every one knows about P2P file sharing...You can get any(legal & illegal) files frm a P2P (peer to peer) network. Even thogh it claims that P2P networks works efficiently by utilising full bandwidth available it will take ages to get a movie or a game. Now here is Internet2.Its still in developing stage and is under test on universties across US where it is mainly used for research purpuses. Now Students are using it for illegal file transfer. They transfer Movies and song collections with in a second(6GB+/Sec).College campuses are the front lines of the recording industry's anti-peer-to-peer (P2P) crusade, and many schools have placed technical restrictions on student downloading. However, students often find a workaround. And Internet2, known as i2hub, may prove to be that work around. Unlike the Internet itself, i2hub enables student file-swappers to transmit large files -- like song collections or movies -- almost as fast as you can say "Avril Lavigne." Earlier this month, a team of international researchers broke an i2hub record by transferring data over 7,000 miles at a speed of 6.25 GB per second –- approximately 10,000 times faster than an average broadband connection. Using the i2hub for the unauthorized transmission of copyrighted material is forbidden, Internet2 universities have been at the forefront of working with the recording industry and motion picture industry to make prevent those things from happening. Many universities, under pressure from recording and film companies, now include bandwidth-limiting software on their campus networks. This can slow file swapping to a crawl -- or stop it altogether. Some schools, like the University of California at Los Angles (UCLA), are experimenting with software that automatically restricts student Internet access in response to a copyright-holder complaint. Other colleges are considering applications that filter network traffic on an individual basis in an attempt to block illegal file swapping. The high-speed network is the product of a consortium of about 200 universities, working in concert with technology companies and government, intended to develop and use advanced network technologies. Using i2hub,Scientists and researchers are able to do things like TV-quality video conferencing...and access supercomputers for grid computing in ways the commercial Internet can't support.. Te network infrastructure of many universities would allow them to apply restrictions at a campus level to Internet2 as well as the commercial Internet.Because all of a campus's networks are tied together, the tactics universities use to fight unauthorized swapping would be "equally effective" on both the Internet and Internet2, he said. The bottom line is clear: University Internet access is not the ticket to free-for-all file swapping it once was. For more info about internet 2 gto there home page

Now they can tap ur phone!!

An Israeli scientist.Elad Barkan and his team found a flaw in the GSM(Global System for Mobile communications) code that allow you to break into mobile phone calls and even take over callers identity.According to Barkan,The GSM code gives high prority to call qualities and noise interference correction after which it encrypts the call. This enabled the hackers to break into the call. The GSM association said that they know about this vulnerability, and had even released a patch to fix the encryption algorithm. However the hackers claimed that they managed to surpase the new encryptin system. So its not safe to carry out confidential conversation over GSM networks as your rivals can easily tap it.

Modify system properties tab

When you rightclick 'My Computer' and choose properties, or on the Control Panel click System, there's your systems' properties. The first tab you might consider your machines' id. Underneath the screen might be a picture already, provided by the manufacturer of your machine. So what about hacking it?? Like this........ Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us [click the image to view in full size] Interested in trying it in ur system???...okay...but be prepared... 1.Check for a file Oemlogo.bmp on system32 folder 2.If it is there then just edit tht pic, else create a bmb image below 160*160 size and save it in system32 folder with the name Oemlogo.bmp. 3.If the file was there already then there will ben a file named Oeminfo.ini.If not there, create a .txt file there and rename it .The syntax of the file would be [General] Manufacturer=Your fake company like srijith v Model=Whatever you call your machine SupportURL=http://www.virtualplastic.net/ LocalFile=Path to local html file [ICW] Product=Tell us, please! [OEMSpecific] SubModel=More branding to edit SerialNo=xxxxxxxxsrijith v yyyyy OEM1=Srijith V OEM2=rules!! [Support Information] Line1=If item is there, and Line2=at least one line set, Line3="Support information button" appears Line4=and info in the lines appears. Line5= Line6=Use empty lines for a spacebreak, Line7=as many lines as you'd like, Line8= ...etc The first two lines, Manufacturer and Model, are displayed on this tab. Actually, you can leave the model line empty; it's the manufacturer line that is required to display oemlogo.bmp. Anything else is optional, and when an oeminfo.ini is found initially, mostly the [ICW] and [OEMSpecific] sections aren't even there, neither are the SupportURL/LocalFile lines. Now i know u may hav some doubts ;) Well...I know ..You may may have doubts about how to change ..........ok post a comment here...i'll check it..no time now!!

juWireless tangle

There is so much noise about wireless today..,that it has raised a new problem-that of choosing the right technology! In near future u may find companies contending for the same space. The best example of this is GSM and CDMA. CDMA was introduced at time, when GSM was well established.Remember the heated discussions about who is best?? Now both technologies coexit. The same is what happening over short-range wireless technologies. Now only bluetooth is available(strong in market). But two other technologies are likely to make there way into our digital life! These are ZigBee and Wireless USB.Out of these wireless USB is targeting similar applications as bluetooth and ZigBee has a different segment of market, though with a bit of overlap.
Today, bluetooth is the technology of choice for many PAN(personal area networks). You can find a huge list of applications and products for bluetooth at there home site. This in effect means that it is a well established technology. Here is where Wireless USB is expected to be introduced. It has a whooping speed of 480Mbps where Bluetooths latest release v2.0EDR(Enhanced Data Rate) have a speed of max 3Mbps.So its clear that wireless USB is targetting at the products that use a wired usb now.So soon we could see our digital camera send a print order to the printer thru air!
Let's come to ZigBee.This one is positioning itself as a low data rate wireless technology! Which is interesting that other technologies are moving the opposite way.The reason for this is its targeted market-remote monitoring of lighting,heating,air-conditioning,etc of a home, office or industry. For this it needs only a little data rate, but should have an efficient power consumption. No one would like to charge the bateries of a/cs and bulbs!.So it might also end up playing in at least some of the market segments enjoyed by bluetooth.
In essence,Bluetooth is being squeezed by Wireless USB from bottom and ZigBee from the top.May be it should also consider othet market segments, which others have'nt yet considered.

Do you have a cellphone??....Well... what a question!!...Every one seems to have one!!... And there is the point! Every one has it.. This is what a virus writer checks. If the platform is common and easily accessable then there is a potential danger of finding a virus for that platform. It happend wn Unix was thr..then for dos..then now for windows. But now ,the number of mobile phone users is far more highr than number of pcs.And as feared, a virus for the cellphones is here- "Cabir". A mobile phone virus is a computer virus specifically adapted for the cellular environment and designed to spread from one vulnerable phone to another. Although mobile phone virus hoaxes have been around for years, the so-called Cabir virus is the first verified example. The virus was created by a group from the Czech Republic and Slovakia called 29a, who sent it to a number of security software companies, including Symantec in the United States and Kapersky Lab in Russia. Cabir is considered a "proof of concept" virus, because it proves that a virus can be written for mobile phones, something that was once doubted. Cabir was developed for mobile phones running the Symbian and Series 60 software, and using Bluetooth. The virus searches within Bluetooth's range (about 30 meters) for mobile phones running in discoverable mode and sends itself, disguised as a security file, to any vulnerable devices. The virus only becomes active if the recipient accepts the file and then installs it. Once installed, the virus displays the word "Caribe" on the device's display. Each time an infected phone is turned on, the virus launches itself and scans the area for other devices to send itself to. The scanning process is likely to drain the phone's batteries. Cabir can be thought of as a hybrid virus/worm: its mode of distribution qualifies it as a network worm, but it requires user interaction like a traditional virus. Cabir is not considered very dangerous, because it doesn't cause actual damage, and because users can prevent infection by simply refusing to accept suspicious files. However, the virus's code could be altered to create more harmful malware that might, for example, delete any information stored on phones it infects, or send out fake messages purporting to be from the phone's owner. Because the worm requires Bluetooth technology to travel, it is geographically constrained to a radius of about 30 metres. Then it is dependent on someone having Bluetooth turned on within that range. And as a final blow to its progress, any unsuspecting phone user in the vicinity would have to accept the virus which would be preceded by a warning that the source of the file is unknown. But it hd managed to make a severe blow to the security firms!.So another threat is up..Soon we cud see the antivirus s/w running on our cell phones. Some firms already introduced Antivirus s/w for symbian and nokia 60 phones... And now i understand how dangerous is it to turn on bluetooth on trains and buses to chat with "charaks".I never ever du that (its known as toothing).
